Rockstars of the Reptilian World is a museum exhibition held in Singapore's Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum. Starring the Gekkonidae family, museum-goers can expect to learn more about the unique and loud sounds of different geckos.
Geckos are nocturnal creatures known for their distinctive communication methods, including barking, head bobbing, and tongue flicking. Inspired by these behaviors, I portrayed them as rock stars in a nighttime concert setting.
For this event, 3 collaterals were created: a logo, a promotional poster and invitation cards.
The logo focuses on the sound of geckos, since unlike lizards, geckos bark and chirp.
An irregular, pointy shape was used to represent the gecko's piercing cry, encapsulating the animal with the shape of its sound. Instead of the gecko’s naturally curvy shape, sharp and straight lines were used to convey a degree of discomfort to the viewer, highlighting how noisy the animal can be.
Vibrant and bold colours (lime-green, yellow and orange) were used in an analagous colour scheme, representing the flashy nature of some of these geckos’ patterns. Texture was also added to create noise in the design.
The poster juxtaposes a small gecko with its large shadow, emphasizing its loudness. The Hydra is an ode to the gecko's regenerative abilities, and introduces the 3 species of geckos featured in the event - the Tokay, Leopard and Crested Gecko.
Like old-school rock concert flyers, the museum posters are available in brightly-coloured variations. Instead of a typeface, I handwrote the title of the event. I kept the overall design minimalistic, since it is still a museum event.
Using the same concept and visuals from the poster, the invitation card comes with a museum entry ticket disguised as a rock concert ticket.
The "now showing" line at the bottom extends to the back of the card, intuitively guiding viewers to flip to the back. The invitation card also comes with interactive flip-open panels, revealing more information about the geckos featured in this event.
